Chess is a strategic board game for two players, contested on a 64-square grid arranged in an 8x8 pattern. Each competitor commands an army of 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. Victory is achieved by checkmating the opponent’s monarch, trapping it under inescapable threat of capture.
