The church steeple ahead still stood, its rusted cross tilted like a broken promise. Maybe supplies lingered in the basement. Maybe not. Survival had whittled hope down to a single mantra: *Move. Adapt. Outlast.* Dawn bled through ash-clouds as he pried open the door, grip tightening on a fire axe stained with things he’d rather forget.
